How to style a cross necklace

Three decisions carry most of it: the length, whether it sits alone or layered, and how big the pendant is against your frame. Get those right and the rest follows. A cross should look like something you wear, not something you are presenting.

Length, and where it sits

  • 18 inches sits at the base of the neck, visible above most collars.
  • 20 to 21 inches sits at or just below the collarbone. The safest length on most people.
  • 22 inches is the standard adult length and sits below the collarbone.
  • 24 inches drops to mid-chest, which suits a larger pendant.
  • 25 to 30 inches is statement territory. The CRUCIFIX is made in these lengths on purpose: a 6.5 cm cross needs the drop to hang straight.

If you are tall or broad, add an inch to whatever you were going to pick. A chain that is technically correct but sits high looks tight.

Layering two chains

The rule that works: short chain above, longer pendant below, with at least two inches of daylight between them so they read as two pieces rather than a tangle. A plain chain above a pendant is the reliable pairing, because two pendants at different lengths compete.

The SILEN chain is built for exactly this job. It carries no pendant, every link is faceted, and it holds its own as the short layer. The CRUCIFIX and SILEN set is that pairing sold together, the faceted chain short with the forged cross below.

Pendant scale

Scale the pendant to your frame and to your collar. A small pendant on a broad chest disappears; a 50 mm cross under a buttoned shirt reads as a lump. The CRUSHED CROSS is made in three sizes for this reason: small at 31 × 22 mm goes under a collar, medium at 42 × 31 mm is the everyday size, and large at 50 × 36 mm is meant to sit open on the chest.

Metals

Match the metal at your neck to the metal on your hand and wrist, or mix deliberately by repeating each metal at least twice across the body. What looks accidental is one lone piece in an odd metal. Elaré prices gold and silver identically on every piece, so this is purely a look decision. See gold vs silver.

Under or over the shirt

Over an open collar or a plain tee is where a cross looks best. Under a shirt is the right call with a tie, with formalwear, and at work if your workplace is that kind of workplace. A textured pendant such as CRUSHED CROSS will catch on fine knitwear, so wear it outside the layer, not under it.

Wearing it respectfully

A cross is a symbol before it is an accessory. If you are buying one as a gift, the safest choices are a smaller pendant and a 20 to 22 inch chain.

FAQ

What length cross necklace should I wear?

20 to 22 inches suits most people: 20 sits at the collarbone, 22 just below it. Go to 24 inches for a larger pendant, and add an inch if you are tall or broad. The Elaré CRUCIFIX is made in 25 to 30 inches because the pendant is 6.5 cm.

Can you layer a cross necklace with another chain?

Yes. Put the plain chain short and the pendant longer, with at least two inches between them. A plain chain above a pendant works; two pendants at different lengths compete.

Should a cross necklace be worn inside or outside the shirt?

Outside an open collar or a plain tee is where it looks best. Inside is the right call with a tie or formalwear. Textured pendants catch on fine knitwear, so keep them outside the layer.

What size cross pendant should I get?

Scale it to your frame and collar. Around 31 mm goes under a collar, around 42 mm is the everyday size, and 50 mm and up is meant to sit open on the chest.

Can I mix a gold cross with silver jewelry?

Yes, if it looks deliberate. Repeat each metal at least twice across the body, or keep metals matched within one zone such as the neck and mix across zones.

Can you shower with a cross necklace on?

With Elaré pieces, yes. They are 316L stainless steel, waterproof and tarnish-resistant. Rinse and dry after salt water or chlorine.
